Machine Translation Activity

This Blog post is a response to the 'Machine Translation Activity' given by our professor Ms.Yesha Bhatt ma'am.

  • About the Novel:

Both a romantic-triangle tale and a philosophical take on violence in times of revolution, The Home and the World, set in early twentieth-century Bengal, concerns an aristocratic but progressive man who, in insisting on broadening his more traditional wife’s political horizons, drives her into the arms of his radical school chum.  Satyajit Ray had wanted to adapt Rabindranath Tagore’s classic novel to the screen for decades. When he finally did in 1984, he fashioned a personal, exquisite film that stands as a testament to his lifelong love for the great writer. (Criterion.com)

  • About the Activity:

The Novel originated written in the Bangla language and was translated into the English language by Tagore's nephew Surendranath Tagore. As this language is quite different from the regional language, our professor ma'am came up with a very interesting activity related to this text. We are supposed to write something in English language and then it will be translated into Bangala Language through Google Translator. After this activity, we had a very wonderful expert talk on 'Machine Translation by  Budhiditya Das ma'am. Ma'am is an accomplished Communication Specialist and currently works at Adani Foundation as an Assistant Manager- Corporate Brand Custodian. She is a former student of the Department of English - at Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.

During the workshop, some students read their write up in English and Hindi and translated them into Bangali through Google Translate. Online translation is quite faulty sometimes when we want to know about the emotion or the concern of the work. After completing the session, we all wrote our names in the Bangali language. Some words also not changed in several languages like किन्तु.  Thanking Yesha Bhatt ma'am for organizing a very interesting session.

Here is my write-up in English and it's the translation in Bangali Language.
