Thinking Activity : W.B.Yeats:Poems

This Blog-post is a response of thinking activity on 'W.B.Yeats's poems' given by our professor Dr. Dilip Barad Sir. To know more about this task, CLICK HERE.

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was Pre-eminent Irish author of twentieth century literature.  In December 1923, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature(click this highlighted words), "for his always inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation"

  •  Pandemic Reading of 'The Second Coming':
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

'The Second Coming' was published after first world war in 1920. The poem connected with War as well the 1918–1919 influenza pandemic. His wife Georgie Hyde-Lees was affected by virus and very closed to death. During her recovery from the influenza, he wrote this poem.

  • Biographical Event:
The point to be proved that, is the particular poem or any work connected with pandemic or diseases and we should look upon the biographical event or the history of writer that, is there is any personal event which related to the work or is the particular work create by writer's own imagination or not.In Yeats's life, his wife Georgie Hyde-Lees was affected by virus and very closed to death. During her recovery from the influenza in 1918-19. That time many pregnant women were died during pandemic. Among 1,350 reported cases of influenza among pregnant women during the pandemic of 1918, the proportion of deaths was reported to be 27% (NCBI).
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Now, as our professor taught us that after find particular point, try to find lines which relatable with pandemic or disease. In this stanza, words like falcon, blood-dimmed tide is loosed perhaps described the large number of death caused by nature, like Covid-19.The ceremony of innocence also shows the death ceremony or we can say the ceremony of pandemic era. Lack conviction which might present the blind-faith of people during pandemic while the situation goes on out of control and the number of dying people increased cause of flu or pandemic.As Elizabeth Outka said in the interview,

  • Reread the poem 'War' poem by replacing the word 'war; with 'pandemic. Does it make any sense?
On Being Asked for a War Poem

I think it better that in times like these
A poet's mouth be silent, for in truth
We have no gift to set a statesman right;
He has had enough of meddling who can please
A young girl in the indolence of her youth,
Or an old man upon a winter’s night.

This is another shortest but well-known poem by Yeats.However it written in 1915 just after one year of first world war which was a response of requesting to write a poem which composed on politics, by American novelists, Henry James and Edith Wharton  (Clicked their names and visit Wikipedia page to know more) The whole poem is about politics, but if we can read as a pandemic, perhaps it will be little difficult.

  • Pandemic reading:
The poem's title like this,'On Being Asked for a Pandemic Poem.'  The poet might be write in the context of war poetry, but that was the time of great influenza which terribly affects on society as per as war. First two lines seems not perfect for pandemic reading because, perhaps poet or speaker says that he thinks, this time is better to silent, but in pandemic situation, one can be not silent. There is possibility about politically statements, on that time as a individual people, we might be aware about the situation, not have the silence on our mouth.

In last three lines, there is something possibility to read as pandemic, because as poet mentioned about youth has laziness toward protect themselves. And senior citizens has not strength to protect themselves against the virus or pandemic situation. At the conclude point, I can't found whole poem as a pandemic poem.

Movie Screening - "Vita and Virginia" by Chanya Button

This Blog-post is a response of thinking activity on Movie Screening - "Vita and Virginia" by Chanya Button given by Vaidehi Hariyani Ma'am. To know more about this task, CLICK HERE

  • Intro of the Film:

This film was released in 2018 written and directed by Chanya Button. Starring by Gemma Arterton as Vita Sackville-West Elizabeth Debicki  as Virginia Woolf. Whole story line leads the setting of 1920s, the story of love affair between socialite Vita Sackville-West and literary icon Virginia Woolf. This element of her life forced her to write and finally she shaped her last novel of her literary carrier by very popular novel, 'Orlando:A Biography' published in 11 October 1928.

"Please, in all this muddle of life,continue to be a bright and constant star. Just a few things remain as beacons:poetry,and you and solitude.

This is my favorite quote by Virginia Woolf, she wrote it in her book, 'Letters of Vita Sackville-West to Virginia Woolf '.that I think quite relatable to Orlando which we had studied.The purpose of transparency of these two pictures is, in the background of this picture which I choose is green tree, which shows that their relation is still green in our literature but because of the identity, they not enjoyed their colorful life.

Here are my answer to the questions:

  • How far do you feel that Orlando is influenced by Vita and Virginia’s love affair? Does it talk only about that or do you find anything else too?

If we read both's biography mostly the outcome is that both had affair each other. As in the article(Click Here to read) mentioned that Vita was married in 1913 at the private chapel in Knole. Her husband, Harold Nicolson, was a diplomat, politician, critic and biographer. After a brief overseas posting, they returned to England and went on to buy Sissinghurst Castle in a practically derelict state. Together, they re-built the house and designed the now world-famous garden, visited by keen gardeners from all over the world.

Vita and Harold remained close throughout a relatively unorthodox marriage. Both had affairs with members of the same sex, and Vita's relationship with Virginia Woolf is celebrated in Woolf's novel, Orlando, inspired by Knole and Vita's inability to inherit her beloved family home. The original manuscript for Orlando is inscribed 'Vita from Virginia' and remains at Knole today. Vita's son, Nigel Nicolson, has described it as 'the longest and most charming love-letter in literature.'

Another thing is that about sex. In today's time it is not new thing to see not new thing. But if we can see the setting that while the two women were open about their relationship, it was also during a time when British society was more socially conservative. While male homosexuality in the U.K. was still a criminal offense at the time, there was no equivalent legislation that targeted gay women. However, in 1921, some lawmakers voted to criminalize “sexual acts of gross indecency” between women, although the law was never passed because politicians feared it would encourage women to explore homosexuality. This aspect quite related to the setting of the time while Woolf wrote the novel.

  • Who do you think is confused about their identity Vita or Virginia? Explain with illustrations.
I think Virginia and Vita both confused to had their identity.She had already in the particular dilemma but she can't explore it. While she met Vita, there was something in her inside world which forced to keep herself with Vita. While the other side we can see that Vita had many affairs in her life rather than Virginia. She couldn't keep with one person.

According to Times news, "Sackville-West was always frustrated that she would never be able to inherit Knole due to her gender, as English aristocratic custom forbid it. (This was a point that Woolf highlighted in perhaps her most openly political and feminist work, the 1929 essay A Room of One’s Own, in which she advocated for women to be financially independent.)" The confusion about identify own gender was appeared in both. Although, Virginia also loved her Leonard Woolf and Vita's husband also loved her wife. The area of confusion may be rolling between this four characters.
  • What is society’s thought about women and identity? Do you agree with them? If Yes then why? If no then why?
Before answering this question, I raised one another question that why identity is so important? I think, we all survived in 'Identity Crisis' in our daily life.In psychology, this term was given by psychologist Erik Erikson. Here I shared one interesting YouTube video to understand Erik Erikson’s theory.

I disagree with what society thinks about women's identity. They have their Independence to choose their gender or choose with whom they want to live either male or female.Generally it's define as psychologically but sometimes we think to escape from this situation but we can't. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, it's define that

"personal psycho-social conflict especially in adolescence that involves confusion about one's social role and often a sense of loss of continuity to one's personality"

This is general point without involving any gender. But if we think about,'Women Identity' it might be different. Her beauty, her style to live in front of the people, her looks these all things society expected from the women.But what are the expectations of women are doesn't matter for them. Society thinks about women to live different from the men, they can't do anything like man, because of, if we can see within our India only that it is still Patriotic Society. We can also see in Shakespeare's major plays presents Patriotism. Like Macbeth,Hamlet etc. We just say that nowadays Women are equally stand in the society like Men but still, it is not. I would like to share one another interesting and award winning short-film which talks about Self-Identity and also one good point is that the main character itself is a women.

  • What are your views on Gender Identity? Will you like to give any message to society?
According to my point of view, Gender is only the word which identifies who is male, female and third gender. The word comes to only identifies this three gender. Without knowing the gender, the production of people or in other world, like in animals also is not possible. To know the Gender is necessary thing, but after knowing it and start to judging or misbehaving with them is not the right thing. Third gender is also the part of this society. But our first respect is with the normal people who have normal gender.We couldn't give respect third gender like we give normal's.

If we talk with the reference of Mahabharata, we can see Shikhandi was an Androgyny (can refer to either a combining of both sexes, or a lack of both.) It is not only today's problem, it came from the years ago while human exists.I would like to give the message to society, that just believe in human being, try to stop looking people with 'GENDER' we have to try live together as human being.

  • Write a note on the direction of the movie. Which symbols and space caught your attention while watching the movie?
'Vita and Virginia' is a biographical romantic drama film directed by Chanya Button. We saw it in our class on Netflix platform. Film is based on the letters of Vita-Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf. Very first scene caught my attention while Vita saw Virginia at very first time in the party. Virginia's dance was quite interesting to know what's going in her mind. She danced not normally, it seemed like something will be hidden in her. Here I put GIF. Perhaps it symbolized that Virginia was not in stable condition.

At the nearly end of the movie, while far from her, her mental condition we can see while she saw several black birds in the sky and some attack on her also. Perhaps it symbolized society who ridding her from her identity. Because she now, Vita is not with her after their close relationship. The another silent scene was when she go to near the water to suicide. But she can't because still she believed that she stay with her, but the conflict of to found Vita's identity was still remain. And after that Virginia wrote 'Orlando' which presents the life of Vita.

The another scene was, when Leonard, Virginia's husband was quite worried when he come to know about her condition after Vita leave her. She sudden leave the party when she saw Vita with another women, she first went the river bank and she went her personal room. There was the scene when her husband ran fast to see her, for a while we felt that she suicide, but she actually sat her chair and decide to write a story about Vita, called 'Orlando'.  Even if her sister and other member of Bloomsbury Group were worried for her. She also quoted while she have relation with Vita that,
"I worry I'm quite allowed to desire the same way as you"

  • "Vita and Virginia" had to be made into Bollywood Adaptation, who do you think would be fit for the role of Vita and Virginia?
If "Vita and Virginia" had to be made into Bollywood Adaptation, I think , Mandira Bedi will be fit for Vita's role and Shilpa Shetty will be fit for Virginia's role.(I also hyperlinked on their name, you can visit and read more about these actress).

  • Question's Answers given in task:

  • Here are my interpretations of questions.

1.)Write down the message you want to give from your lyrics.

In this my YouTube video, I choose one 19th Bollywood song, sung by Kishor Kumar and lyrics by Anand Bakshi from the movie Aap Ki Kasam starring by Rajesh Khanna. If we go through the entire original song, the lyrics somewhere connected with memories, and especially the particular moment which never come again. If the particular moment goes one time, it will be only memories, it never come again.The use of flower generally we might be use in some flourish way to show some good feelings, but while Autumn comes, they will dead and they will never born if the Spring will come. Ultimately, the poet interpreted about to live the life and each moment with happiness and keep making memories because they are not mortal. The lyrics are,

2.) Which Poem/Song of Bob Dylan/Robert Frost is relatable with your Video. Why?

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

~Robert Frost

This short poem by Robert Frost has larger meaning of life. The poem has deep meaning about the circle of life and death. The references which given here are come from nature. Like First Green means perhaps Spring. Which come up with some never ending things. The good thing which we might be accept as the richest thing of our emotions or we can say of our life but they will be definitely not come with us, it might be dead or vanished. In my video I shoot the group of senior citizens who were sat and kindly observe the nature because now they are retired from their career and again they try to spend their time with nature because it also one time will dead. So nothing which perhaps the gold or silver can not stay.

Thank You.

Thinking Activity: Understanding the Zeitgeist of the 20th Century Movie: The Great Dictator

To know more about this task and both movies, CLICK HERE. I have written blog-post on  what is Zeitgeist and Frame Study of Modern Times. Click Here to visit.

About the Movie:

The film, 'The Great Dictator' was released in 1940 , an American satirical comedy-drama. By this film, the time period of sound films started to released. Chaplin staring himself in double roll. Again this film also written,directed and produced by Charlie Chaplin.Here writer used historical places and names as a parody.Like,

  • Role of Headlines:

These frames shows that, after wining the war, Hynkel and his power of rulings leads people to surviving days. One of the best characteristic of twentieth century is magazines and newspaper. Chaplin also presents these headlines with high stressful music.

  • War Situation:

Film starting with the war situation. Second world war between two countries. In 20th century, the invasions of bomb, Guns and war weapons were for war situations. A.C.Ward wrote that,
"The perfecting of the internal combustion engine made possible the aeroplane and other means of mass slaughter in two world wars, with nuclear power to follow, bringing the threat of universal destruction."

  • Talent was Slave of Authority:

In the first frame, the Painter and Sculptor were made Hynkel's Painting and Sculpture. While he was free for two or five minutes, he came the room and they made. The authority (here is Hynkel) was not allowed them to work in their particular field. individually. So they were slaves of the authority.

Thinking Activity: Understanding the Zeitgeist of the 20th Century Movie: Modern Times

This Blog-post is a response of thinking activity on 'Understanding the Zeitgeist of the 20th Century:From Modern Times to the era of Great Dictators(Movies)' given by our professor Dr. Dilip Barad Sir. To know more about this task and both movies, CLICK HERE.

What is Zeitgeist ?

According to Merriam Webster dictionary, Zeitgeist is the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era, which also presents the general beliefs, ideas, and spirit of a time and place. In literature it used as a spirit of the particular time which presents the human condition. In this task we suppose to write  about our understanding the zeitgeist of twentieth century with the references of two movies.

Frame Studying or Reading:

There are such a difference between watching film and studying or reading the film. Both are necessary to understand the setting behind the particular literary work in more easier way, especially, the reality of the society.Both movies were written, director and performed by the great English comedian Charlie Chaplin. We also studied the time gap between both movies and how the improvement was going of silent movie to talking films. As Dilip Barad sir said that, "Movies serves the purpose and students can get an 'easy' understanding of the 'esoteric' nature of the literature."We had two movie screening to understand the concept of the setting of twentieth century, which obviously reflects in the literature of that particular time. I also wrote Face Book post, to know Click Here and visit my FB post.

There are four types of frames are studying in art.

  • Subjective frame
  • Cultural frame
  • Structural frame
  • Postmodern frame

Click this image to know more in detailed.

The lats,Postmodern frame using by the artist who might be presents the society by using parody,irony, satire and artistic quality to expose power assumption. Make the real world within the comic way, but the real voice behind the particular comedy is very authentic with the reality of the present time. Also it very challenged to the artist to present the hidden intentions of the high authorities. This particular era influenced by it's predecessor age, which was twentieth century also we know as The Modern Era.

  •  About the Time:

This Clock frame and the quote written here presents the basic idea of that what about in the film. This is a story which centralized with  industrialization and  individual enterprise. Humans run away to pursuing the happiness, which means the peoples of the century, (20th century) are not free to live in their air or with their happiness.

  •  About Sheeple:

The story roaming around the character, named The Tramp(also the title name of Chaplin's another silent-film.), also known The Little Tramp. Starring by Charlie himself, was a worker of assembling line. The crowed followed by the authority of factories, or we can say the presidential rules were ruling upon the workers. Chaplin presents Sheep's mob as allegorically presented the human minds were pushed up by the particular authorities. As A.C.Ward mentioned,

"Victorian Social slumming among the deserving poor was displaced by intellectual  slumming among the  workers."

  • The Assembly Lines:

Still the century was not too good in mechanization, however, the particular authorities uses the workers to being a part of manufacturing of the particular thing. Although it's pitiful to the people, because they are the human beings, not machines. What's in today's time, we can see in Coca Cola's Factory and Amul Food factory, there are no any humans, while in twentieth century we can see that the used of people in terms of mechanization. A.C.Ward wrote about the death of craftsmanship that,
"Throughout the period between the two world wars, the growth of mass production methods in industry created deep concern among sociologists who recognised that a lifetime of work on assembly-line processes was destructive of interest in the objects produced and a threat of death to craftsmanship."
  Nowadays, people are not the part of manufacturing, because of the mechanism, the particular authority wants to keep the work speedy and without errors, while human makes mistakes. Here, I put one video of Amul food factory.
  • Power of Richness or Mind not of Muscular:

In this three frames, Chaplin described that how the power of mind or worked to make a position in particular authority, but the man who has muscular ability, he doesn't make his position on high level. The another reason is also about Richness.Only the voice of Richness who had the mind power could hold on the poor people. Third and fourth frame also shows that how the human beings becoming mechanized under the influences of Industrialization.

  • People didn't live with Luxuries:
In the first frame, Tramp and Ellen were in department (Mall) in which there were enjoyed the fancy life. They know that they will not be too rich to keep this luxuries with them. The only thing to life with luxury was Fancy life. But in the second frame, they also happy with their factual life.

  • Advertisement:

As A.C.Ward mentions that
"Professionals advertising experts, indeed, would not (at least in private) claims interest in the nature of the product but only in selling it."
"The Truth in the Advertising, a principle subsequently overlaid by conscious exaggeration sometimes bordering on misrepresentation. "
In the movie, the advertiser came up with the new innovative machine which helps to  Advertisers were interested to selling their products. In first two frames, the advertisers only tested the product to the worker, and again in third frame they put the machine boll in the dish. Ultimately, it shows that the workers were not important, they gave importance to their profit, money without carrying the people.
