Thinking Activity on Midnight's Children

This Blog-post is a response to a thinking activity on Midnight's Children given by our professor Dr.Dilip Barad Sir. To know more about this task, CLICK HERE.

Salman Rushdie is an Indian-born British American author who is widely talked about by people nowadays because he suffered a terrible attack. Rushdie, the author of thirteen novels including Midnight’s Children, was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981.

  • Midnight's Children :

The novel is divided into three sections:

Book I:1915-1947

Book II: 1947-1965

Book III: 1965-1978

Saleem Sinai is born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, the very moment of India’s independence. Greeted by fireworks displays, cheering crowds, and Prime Minister Nehru himself, Saleem grows up to learn the ominous consequences of this coincidence. His every act is mirrored and magnified in events that sway the course of national affairs; his health and well-being are inextricably bound to those of his nation; his life is inseparable, at times indistinguishable, from the history of his country. Perhaps most remarkable are the telepathic powers linking him with India’s 1,000 other “midnight’s children,” all born in that initial hour and endowed with magical gifts.

This novel is a fascinating family saga and an astonishing evocation of vast land and its people–a brilliant incarnation of the universal human comedy. Midnight’s Children stands apart as both an epochal work of fiction and a brilliant performance by one of the great literary voices of our time.

  • Film Adaptation:

Midnight's Children's same name adaptation of the film, directed by Indian-born Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta. The film was released on 9 September 2012 (Toronto International Film Festival) on 26 October 2012 (India).
  • Narrative technique:
The narrative technique is like the soul of the novel or story. The story is like nothing without a narrator. In the novel, the story is going through the first-person narrator, Saleem Sinai. In the novel, the speaker is Saleem while the listener is Padma. She is Saleem's loving companion and caretaker, and she will become his fiancée at the end of the novel. In the novel, Padma comes in the first book, the second part, Mercurochrome and her name comes 223 times as per what we can find in the e-text.

"Padma-our plump Padma-is sulking magnificently. (She can't read
and, like all fish-lovers, dislikes other people knowing anything she doesn't.
Padma: strong, jolly, a consolation for my last days. But definitely a
bitch-in-the-manger.)"
While in the movie, there is no audience or listener even nothing mentioned Padma by Saleem. However later on she becomes his fiance. The text leads the voice of the speaker through the essence of the listener. As Saleem mentioned,
"I have been interrupted by Padma, who brought me my dinner and
then withheld it, blackmailing me: 'So if you're going to spend all your time
wrecking your eyes with that scribbling, at least you must read it to me.' I
have been singing for my supper-but perhaps our Padma will be useful,
because it's impossible to stop her from being a critic."
The film is a modern and technical way to give the story to the audience. Here, the audience is the viewers who are seeing the film but Padma in the novel is not like only the viewer or listener. She is only the character who remains in the story who is female and thinks critically and also we can read the feminist reading that she has only the ability to ask questions to the man. Even, Saleem himself in the novel tells that,
Women have always been the ones to change my life: Mary Pereira, Evie Burns, Jamila Singer, Parvati-the-witch must answer for who I am; and the Widow, who I’m keeping for the end; and after the end, Padma, my goddess of dung. Women have fixed me all right, but perhaps they were never central—perhaps the place which they should have filled, the hole in the center of me which was my inheritance from grandfather Aadam Aziz, was occupied for too long by my voices. Or perhaps—one must consider all possibilities—they always made me a little afraid.
Character:
The storyline of the film seems the same as the novel, but while reading some parts of the novel, we can see that there are some changes done by the creators.
  • Characters are not in the film:
1. Sonny Ibrahim :
One of the children living on Methwold’s Estate. Sonny is Saleem’s best friend. He is also in love with Saleem’s sister, the Brass Monkey. (From Spark Notes.) Sonny is Saleem's childhood friend. His childhood events are much important to grasp the dark event of the history of Emergency. His character is also connected with the mechanism.
A true fact about Sonny Ibrahim: despite all his bullfighting dreams, his genius lay in the realm of mechanical things. For some time now, he had taken on the job of maintaining all the bikes on Methwold's Estate in return for gifts of comic-books and a free supply of fizzy drinks. Even Evelyn Lilith Burns gave her beloved India bike into his care. All machines, it seemed, were won over by the innocent delight with which he caressed their moving parts; no contraption could resist his ministrations. To put it another way: Sonny Ibrahim had become (out of a spirit of pure inquiry) an expert at picking locks.

2. Commander Sabarmati and Laila Sabarmati:
Sabarmati couple is a real couple and their story which Rushdie mentioned in the book is also a real one that is missing in the film. Here is Saleem's narration which is in the text,

And, finally, on the top floor, were Commander Sabarmati and Lila-Sabarmati who was one of the highest flyers in the Navy, and his wife with her expensive tastes; he hadn't been able to believe his luck in getting her a home so cheaply. They had two sons, aged eighteen months and four months, who would grow up to be slow and boisterous and to be nicknamed Eyeslice and Hairoil.
Commander Sabarmati (Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati) murdered his wife's lover named Prem Ahuja. While in the novel Homi Catrack(Saleem's neighbor and racecourse owner) had an affair with Lila Sabarmati. As in the second Book, the event is coming about the murder,
"When Commander Sabarmati's wife Lila answered the door, he shot her twice in the stomach at point-blank range. She fell backwards; he marched past her and found Mr. Homi Catrack rising from the toilet, his bottom unwiped, pulling frantically at his trousers. Commander Vinoo Sabarmati shot him once in the genitals, once in the
heart, and once through the right eye. The gun was not silenced; but when it had finished speaking, there was an enormous silence in the apartment. Mr. Catrack sat down on the toilet after he was shot and seemed to be smiling."

"A newspaper said of the Sabarmati affair: 'It is a theatre in which India
will discover who she was, what she is, and what she might become.'… But Commander Sabarmati was only a puppet; I was the puppet-master, and the nation performed my play-only I hadn't meant it! I didn't think he'd… I only wanted to… a scandal, yes, a scare, a lesson to all unfaithful wives and mothers, but not that, never, no."

Saleem himself confesses that he becomes a layer of the event. In the novel, Commander shoots both, his wide Laila and his lover(also his neighbour, Homi Catrack). While in history, the Commander shot only the man, not his wife. Rather, the main thing which I observed is Saleem's learning of how to watch enemies from Dr.Schaapsteker and his first experiment on Homi Carrack as he sees the affair of his mother. His enemy might be strong after seeing extramarital affairs. This part is missing in the film.
  • Themes and Symbols:
The film adaptation captured themes like Hybridity in the language (Chatanification and other words) and culture (swapping the children). Another and main concern of the novel which Rushdie probably remains as it is in the film also is about History (Emergency 1975) and the individual ( India - Saleem himself). Magic realism is more effectively presented in the film, however, the concern of showing the history is somewhere dull also. Because we already studied the major concern of the text before the screening.

Midnight itself shows the symbol of the dark episode of independent India in Emergency 1975. The Silver Spittoon is very well captured in the film as we can see through the cinematography the loss of memory and source of amnesia. The very first frame in the film is about The Perforated Sheet is also captured in the film and becomes an important event in Aziz's life, through it he met Amina. During Jamila's performance, a perforated sheet again comes and in the film, it is quite beautiful to present her purity. Saleem's Nose and Shiva's Knees symbolize oppositely. Bothe characters' plus points are captured well in the film.

Film Screening Mahesh Dattani’s "The Final Solutions"

This Blog-post is a response to Film Screening Mahesh Dattani’s "The Final Solutions" given by our professor madam miss Vaidehi Hariyani. To know more about this task, CLICK HERE.

  • About the Author:

Mahesh Dattani is an Indian director, actor, playwright, and writer. He wrote some brilliant plays such as 'Final Solutions', 'Dance Like a Man, 'Bravely Fought the Queen', 'On a Muggy Night in Mumbai', 'Tara', 'Thirty Days in September', 'The Big Fat City' and 'The Murder That Never Was'. He is the first playwright in English to be awarded the Sahitya Akademi award. His plays have been directed by eminent directors like Arvind Gaur, Alyque Padamsee, and Lillete Dubey. (timesofindia)

About the Play:
Final Solution is a three-act play written by very prominent Indian English writer Mahesh Dattani. The major concern or thematic concept is about communalism and communal riots. Narrating technique through dairy is also very appreciated work done by Dattani. The play is connected with a real episode of Indian History the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 in India which unleashed violence and riots between the two major communities, namely the Hindus and Muslims. (A Note of Integration in Dattani’s Final Solutions Against Religious Differentiation). The play also covered Postcolonial aspects through Daksha who read her diary which played a vital role in the whole play and display the shifting from present to past and past to present.
  • About the Screening :

We had a screening of the movie Final Solution' by Mahesh Dattani. Seeing the play is another level of experience to learning about the language of cinematography. However, we were introduced to Vaidehi Hariyani ma'am, which is a kind of mixture of play and movie because on the Zee5 platform it is shown in the section of movies. The use of #chorus is very well presented by director Mahesh Dattani himself. They show the inner conflicts in some dark stages of the character's life. It became tough to understand the ongoing situation of Hardika (a 15-year married girl) or Daksha (old Hardika) is parallel going by Daksha who read #dairy of her past events. The use of lighting and the choice of colors is deliberately done by the director. However, we also read feminist postcolonial arguments from the Gujarati family. There is no such final solution instead of interpretations or acceptance.
  • The Significance of the Title:

The play is written after the independence of India but it is the presentation of the tension and crisis that people felt. The story is led by first-person narrator Daksha or Hardika with the dairy of her past or we can say her young life and her present life. While reading the title, probably Dattani put the article 'The' deliberately, because ultimately there is no solution to the communal crisis and their rights. The very idea of communalism is somewhere in the strong line while the partition between India and Pakistan. The false narrations also played quite an important role created by the communist party. By giving the title Final Solution, Dattani probably gives the message that there is a big slap to Humanity by creating such a communal riot.
  • Does "The Final Solutions" makes any significant changes in society?

The play is written in the centralized historical events in India. The event is about the demolition of Barbi Masjid on 6 December 1992 in Uttarpradesh.

The play opens the history again to the viewers and with such an excellent narrative pattern, Dattani also opens the reading of post-feminist discourse and re-visiting very big events in Indian History. During this chaos of communal riot around 2000 people died. The play has also covered the attack on Rathyatra in Gujarat by the Muslim community. The significance is the end of the play while Bobby tack the ideal of lord Krishna in his hand and his powerful speech gives the massage about Humanity.
  • Beginning and End of the Movie and the effects of communal disturbance:

The play started with poetic lines with floating animation which described the chaos of something that will happen in the play. The very important part is about the musical chorus around seven or eight people. Along with the musical starting, the whole play is interwoven between the past and present of the protagonist, Hardika or Daksha. The play is also flowing like hesitation of something will happen. Hardika's interpretation plays a very vital role in Ramnik's liberal thinking and also to keep both Muslim guys in his home. Perhaps there is no such end to the play, but while observing technically, the end is the starting point of a new world through liberal speech of Bobby. There is much communal disturbance between characters in particular situations. Especially, with Hardika and two Muslim guys. Her disagreement with Ramnik to stay them in their house is suggest her communal crisis, though it seems more personal because of her bad past but still after realizing that Tasneem's stall was also fired by her husband and family members, there are no changes in her voice but only regretting expressions.
  • Symbols in the Movie:

In the musical chorus, majority of the play only two colors were shown, Green and Orange lighting. And seeing their movements with several dialogues and poetic lines, Green symbolized the Muslim community and Orange symbolized the Hindu community. Both presented the contrast which is the concern of the play. The very catchy symbol is the book or the diary of Hardika. Which presented the education of females at that time. However her interest in listening to music and her love for Pakistani Singer Noor Jehan and her interest in singing.
  • Comment on Education
In the play, we can see two sides of education, one is pre-independent through the character of Hardika/Daksha and another one is through Smita's character after the independence of India. Both have their perspectives of looking at the situation, however, ultimately it is all over to the situations that Hardika or Daksha faced under such pressure from the masculine voice and on another side, Smita has her father's support for thinking. Hardika has only one device that is dairy and through dairy, she can only describe her guts, happiness, and all feelings. While in Smita's case she has her family listen to her voice. Which clearly describes the role of education. Between the relation of Smita and Bobby they practically thought about their relationship which is presented in liberal thinking. The play is very helpful to understand the chaos by such communal riots.

Sunday Reading task on Thinking Skill Workshop

This blog post is a response to the Sunday Reading task on,' Thinking Skill' given by our Prof.Dr.Dilip Barad Sir.

"Thinking to about thinking in order to improve thinking" - Prof.Milan Pandya.

Department of English, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, Gujarat organized academic workshops yearly. This year we had a fantastic two-day workshop on Thinking Skills, conducted by Prof.Dr.Milan Pandya Sir.

Milan Pandya is a teacher, trainer, and educator in the field of Thinking Skills i.e. Critical, Creative and Design Thinking, English Language Teaching & Communication Skills. With more than 12 years of teaching experience, Mr. Pandya has authored 02 books and presented and published a number of research papers in national and international conferences and journals. He has taught/trained in numerous Universities/Institutions training more than 30,000 people in Thinking Skills across world.
Mr. Pandya has BA & MA in English Literature, M.Phil in English Language Teaching (ELT) & his Ph.D involves study in Online Teaching, Communicative Competence & Critical Thinking. He currently holds a position of Vice President of Advancement at Critical Thinking Solutions company in Ontario, Canada, and teaches at multiple colleges such as Conestoga and Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada.
13 August 2022 is the first day of the Workshop. Basically, we just heard the word thinking skill, but after coming to the department we did and doing our task as a thinking activity to explore our creative and critical thinking. But the workshop gives more insight about thinking in a Logical, Rational, and Scientifically way. This trio of the process of doing critical thinking is very much necessary while attempting the criticism in a certain way.
  • Why Logical, Rational, and Scientifically?
As per what I understand of Critical thinking, these three notions give the accurate value of the answer to the arguments. This also helps to understand the arguments in a more clear way by proving the thing. Reasonable answers give moral support to the argument. With the essence of logic in the argument, the process of answering it has become more clear while reaching the final stage of the argument. So, these three concepts of critical thinking are very much necessary when attempting such a critical argument.
The Lecture also gave such wonderful examples which help to understand the critical thinking process in an easier way. There is Context and Proof are very much necessary to organize the final stage of our argument. These are important ornaments that make the argument in more beautiful way. Here I want to explain some examples that sir gave:
For Context, we introduced in detail through living examples and advertisements. Knowing the context helps 50% of our argument. The Lecture also gave an example of a soap advertisement which is starring by celebrities. In that the critics argue might arise that why one wealthy man doing advertise of cheap things like soaps which are available within 30 or 40 rupees!
Another example like, one recent tweet by Indian Film actor Shatish Shah, (the photo is in the center, given in the above collage at the bottom row). He posted on his tweeter account, "The very same TIRANGA DHWAJ my mother had got during Quite India Movement 1942). And then people are doing to fact change. The very next image is showing that one man and one is probably his children who riding the bicycle. The woman is doing sewing at the center and the little girl is enjoining the ride. It seems very useful but as harmful also. Also one can see binaries between man and woman.
We also come to know about a new word, which is quite important in thinking skills:
Other examples like Shraddha Kapoor's post on Indian Soldier.
This photo was posted in 2017Along with Shraddha Kapoor, BJP MP Kirron Kher also posted a fake photo. The photo is not actually of Indian army soldiers but of Russian Army Soldiers. So it describes that,
"If something is true, what else has to be true in that"
It is also worth notice that how much we invest in the self while writing and marketing or attempting criticism. Opinions also make us confused to do fact-checking. However, no one is critical-minded by born. One has to practice and keep thinking by questioning in a certain way.

The next day on 14 Aug 2022 we learned Creative thinking through several interesting activities.

From this image, we are supposed to create categories that will be something beyond normal categories like food, Money, and other things. I found several categories like Life and Death, Science and Technology, Music and Painting, Money and Banking, and Weapons. Lecturer also gave some more keys to connect like with song, literature, Idioms, and Phrases. With literature, I also found one novel by Kazuo Ishiguro 'An Artist of the Floating World', and very famous thoughts 'Art for the sake of Art.' Lecturer also shows another image like a toothbrush and gave the task to think more about ways of its use. Mind is immediately connected with obvious use or thing. Attempting something creative we have to see beyond the common thing, it is the primary purpose of creative thinking. We also come to know that creativity is trained in your mind in what others can not able to do. And also have patience while doing something creative activity. We also practiced through some situations and dilemma  given by the lecturer, Like Trollyology.
After attending such interesting sessions, I come to know that Studying criticism is very hard while we try to attempt certain theories in our life. To break the construction without breaking its value is very much necessary while attempting criticism. It depends on how much you invest yourself in the thinking process. The process also consumes time, it is necessary to have patience. Thanking to the head of the department, Prof.Dr.Dilip Barad sir for organizing the workshop.

Being a Committee leader sounds so proud, but it is as hard to work. We have to convince the members to participate so they can also improve themselves. To see if every internet connection is working, router and ethernet connection is working or not. Before the workshop started, we checked out all department laptops, how many are working or not, and kept the record handy as well with soft copy, and how many working with AC power and DC power. From time to time also have to see that every resource person's presentation must be sent to you. It also sounds so easy but it is hard to do. Because you have no such kind of experience, but as we attended our last workshop, we learned so many things that how to improve your teaching skills parallel with your learning skill. These two things make our PROCESS OF LEARNING more beautiful.

On ICT Workshop 2022, we organized a two-day workshop(8th and 9th of August) under the guidelines of our Head of the Department Prof.Dr.Dilip Barad Sir. I took the opportunity as a Resource Person in this workshop, I dealt with three topics, Google Account, Google Chrome, and Google Drive. During the learning of such tools, I found that it is quite difficult to learn and work through mobile because it has a limited working system and very hurdles that students feel during working or uploading such a thing. However, I come to know through my senior Miss Ruchi Joshi about 'Desktop Site' on Mobile Phones. This is not a part of learning the digital skills for literature students, but very necessary to learn how we can work smartly through mobile while using the Chrome browser.

Under such pressure of becoming a Resource Person, I learned many things and it Ultimately is an endless process. From scanning QR codes to teaching such a tool to Juniors is quite an interesting journey this year at the Department of English. I thank all my colleagues who gave them full time to teach the juniors as Resource Person. Also, thanks to juniors to attend and giving their interest to learn digital tools.
