Task 2 Thinking Activity: Verbal Analysis

This Blog-post is a response of thinking activity on Task 2,verbal analysis, given by our professor Dr.Dilip Barad Sir.To know more about this task, CLICK HERE. also visit my other blog-post, on Task 1

We studied about Ivor Armstrong Richards's  Essay, 'Practical Criticism' who is the pioneer of 'New Criticism'. The theory of 'Figurative Language' given by Richards. He also gave the misunderstandings of reading the poetry.In his Essay he gave four types of misunderstandings, which are;

1. Misunderstanding of the sense of poetry: Careless, intuitive reading (rhyme or irregular syntax)

2. Over-literal reading – prosaic reading

3. Defective scholarship; inappropriate metaphor

4. Difference in meaning of words in poetry and prose (Personification, Metaphor etc)

We have supposed to write blog-post of verbal analysis on any poem / song / film song lyric / hymns / devotional songs  or any poetic expression in any language of own choice. I would like to analysis one Hindi Ghazal by Qaisar-ul-Jafri. This Gazal sung by Pankaj Udhas in Album Mukarra , later on he sung same Ghazal in the movie Ek Hi Maqsad(1988)

Title : Deewaron Se Milke

Artist : Pankaj Udhas

Album : Mukarrar (1981)

Lyrics : Qaiser-Ul-Zaffari

Music :Pankaj Udhas

Deewaron se milkar rona achha lagta hai,

Hum bhi pagal ho jayenga aisa lagta hai.

Duniyabhar ki yaadein humse milne aati hai,

Shaam dhale is soone ghar me mela lagta hai.

Kitne dinon ke pyaase honge yaaro socho to,

Shabnam ka qatra bhi jinko dariya lagta hai.

Kisko “Qaiser” pathhar marun kaun paraya hai,

Shish mehal me ek ek chera apna lagta hai.

  • First Impression on Ghazal:

In the first line, poet ( I like to choose word poet because in the last sher(couplet) he used his name)said that he likes to cry while he meet the wall. It's seems like something very deep dark thing which poet can't express in front of the people who are actually not understand his pain so he likes to reveal his pain to the wall which is not alive! And that's why he said that he become mad that nobody like to listen his pain.Further he said that all the people and the memories of the past time, perhaps he recall the memories and it becomes like Fair in the house which means the poet's mind. The word शबनम means the drop of dew. This what I'm not getting what is the meaning of this word. So I do google out this. Perhaps poet said that there is the person who very drought in his life which means there is no happiness in his life and if there is drop like few moments of happiness then he will more happy like he gain the whole sea of happiness. In the last s;her, perhaps poet shows his agitation.

Language and Meaning: Language is not very hard to understand. Words are quite simple. Only one word शबनम is little difficult to what it's mean. If we go with meaning which become hard to understand that what poet try to say.

  • Figurative Language: Words like दीवार- रोना, शबनम का कतरा-दरिया, शीश महल-चेहरा.
  • Misunderstanding:

किसको “कैझर” पथ्थर मारूँ कौन पराया है, this line looks like really the poet throw stone to someone? First impression is like this. But it is not practical. शाम ढले इस सूने घर में मेला लगता है. this line like the house is empty but how the fair in house?

  • Rasa (Aesthetics)theory in poem:

Rasa mean the emotions of poet. To know more about this theory, visit my another blog-post, to visit, CLICK HERE. In this poem the emotion (BHAVA) is perhaps Krodha (Anger). But very silently he presents the anger.

Dhvani: शाम ढले इस सूने घर में मेला लगता है.(Lakshana)

Vakrokti:किसको “कैझर” पथ्थर मारूँ कौन पराया है in this line the irony presents in  पराया word.

Thank You.
